TOEFL

TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is a standardized test designed to measure the English language proficiency of non-native English Speaker. It is widely accepted by universities, colleges, and other institutions around the world as part of the admissions process for English speaking academic programs. TOEFL assess four key language skills:

  • READING

  • LISTENING

  • SPEAKING

  • WRITING

The test is available in two formats:

  1. TOEFL iBT (Internet based test)

  2. TOEFL PBT (Paper based Test)

although the iBT format is more commonly administered.

The TOEFL iBT consists of four sections:

  1. Reading: Test takers read passages and answer questions to demonstrate their understanding of academic texts.

  2. Listening: Test takers listen to lectures, conversations, and discussions, and then answer questions based on what they heard.

  3. Speaking: Test takers complete speaking tasks that require them to express their opinions, summarize information, and participate in conversations.

  4. Writing: Test takers write essays in response to prompts that assess their ability to organize and present ideas effectively.

TOEFL scores are valid for two years from the test date. Scores are reported on a scale of 0 to 120 for the TOEFL iBT, with each section scored separately. Institutions set their own score requirements for admission, so it's important for test takers to check the specific score requirements of their desired institutions. IELTS

IELTS (International English Language Testing System) is a standardized test designed to assess the English language proficiency of non-native English speakers. It is accepted by universities, colleges, employers and immigration authorities in many countries around the world.

IELTS measures proficiency in four key 

  • READING

  • LISTENING

  • SPEAKING

  • WRITING

The test is available in two formats:

  1. Academic.

  2. General Training.

IELTS Academic:

This version is typically used for those applying to study at undergraduate or postgraduate levels, or for professional registration purposes. It assesses whether candidates are ready to begin studying or training in an English speaking environment.

IELTS General Training:

This version is suitable for candidates who are going to English speaking countries for secondary education, work experience, or training programs. It is also a requirement for migration to Australia, Canada, New Zealand and The UK.

The IELTS test consists of four sections:

  1. Listening: Test takers listen to recordings of native English speakers and answer questions based on what they hear.

  2. Reading: Test takers read passages and answer questions to demonstrate their understanding of written English.

  3. Writing: Test takers complete two writing tasks. Task 1 requires candidates to describe visual information (such as graphs or charts), and Task 2 requires candidates to write an essay in response to a prompt.

  4. Speaking: Test takers participate in a face-to-face interview with a certified examiner. The speaking test assesses their ability to communicate effectively in spoken English and includes a variety of tasks such as discussing familiar topics, giving opinions, and expressing ideas.

IELTS scores are reported on a 0-band scale, with each band corresponding to a level of English proficiency. Test takers receive a score for each section as well as an overall band score. Institutions and organizations set their own score requirements, so it's important for test takers to check the specific requirements of their desired institutions or employers.
